The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It Movie Review

Updated: Aug 28, 2021

The reignition of a 5-year-old sequel with a boom.

The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It is a 2021 supernatural horror film, directed by Michael Chaves (The Curse of La Llorona) and is based on the murder trial of Arnie Cheyenne Johnson that took place in 1981, Connecticut.

The plot follows the arrest of the 19-year-old Arnie Johnson (Ruairi O'Connor) after killing his landlord, Bruno Sauls (Ronnie Gene Blevins). Earlier that day, Arnie had called in sick after having a paranormal experience. In the court, Arnie's defense lawyer (Ashley LeConte Campbell) pleaded "not guilty by reason of demonic possession". After connecting a few dots, paranormal investigators Ed & Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson & Vera Farmiga) tracked down what possibly lies behind the exorcism that they have assisted months prior, involving Arnie's girlfriend's (Sarah Catherine Hook) family: The Glatzel's.

Due to the nature of an adapted screenplay, surely this movie relies heavily on the actuality of the real-life case and the involvement of detective work. But the brilliant part is the incorporation of a few filler stories and scenes that actually widen the audience's view about why everything happens the way it does in this movie. The exploration of these fillers definitely makes the plot even richer, which made this movie more than just a journey through a series of demonic experiences. So it feels like we're witnessing the weaving of one thread to another, producing one decent tapestry called The Conjuring 3.

The scoring by Joseph Bishara sounds even more haunting with each movie in this cinematic universe and most importantly, giving The Conjuring 3 an even stronger identity. Keeping on comparing the third instalment to the previous ones, the improvement of the special effects and the editing by Peter Gvodaz and Christian Wagner has an even more influential role in this movie. With all this goodness complementing each other, the audiences' senses are elevated and it is obvious that this movie is so much bigger than its predecessor.

Not forgetting the heart of this movie, we will get to see more of Ed & Lorraine as a couple in the most realistic way possible. As they're a gifted pair, we are so focused on the paranormal the cases that have introduced us to them. But it shouldn't have stopped at the number of exorcisms or reading that they've performed on the screen. Because at the end of the day, they are two loving people who care deeply for each other and had to constantly create balance in order to stand strong through every couple's dynamic and all the wearisome cases.

Despite my fascination with almost everything that is done, I can't promote the ending as "satisfying", due to the lack of solid resolution which I deemed anti-climatic. I'd promote Conjuring 3 instead as unpredictable for successfully keeping the audiences on their toes and giving room for more imagination. As a long-time fan, I am absolutely happy with how it turned out after waiting for years. If you're a new audience, this movie would make a good introduction to the Conjuring Universe.

So yes, I recommend this movie and hope you enjoy it! Please do check the availability in your respective country and pay attention to the safety measures.

Happy watching!
