Updated: Aug 17, 2021

A story about feeling and dealing with it.

When was the last time a movie or a book or in this case, a series makes you feel like being hugged by a warm blanket? Has it been a while or just yesterday? Who cares! Everybody deserves a good watch. Thus 'Normal People' would be perfect for you.

Normal People is a 2020 Irish drama TV series co-produced by the maker of Oscar-nominated film Room (2015). Adapted from Sally Rooney's 2018 NY Times bestseller novel of the same name, the plot follows the story of two teenagers, Marianne and Connell experiencing first love, adolescent dynamic, heartbreak, and more heartbreak.

Marianne is a smart loner whose mother employs Connell's mother to clean her house. While the popular Connell is her equal academic-wise, he doesn't speak his mind as loudly as she does. The two find comfort with each other and agree to sneak around everyone's back with their little romance. It seems cute at first (because it is), but we shall acknowledge that teenagers deal with feelings and sometimes mess things up, just like you and I.

It might sound uneventful watching people trying to figure out their life. So what makes it special? Because we'll get to walk with the middle school Marianne and Connell all the way to their undergraduate years in Trinity College. We experience how relatable it is to grow. Marianne finding friendships, giving into wrong people, while Connell not being able to tell what he feels or what he wants, or sometimes both feeling out of the place.

It's a joy to watch Marianne being the only person who can give Connell the space to be himself. As well as watching Connell giving Marianne normalcy, something she doesn't feel at home. But sometimes it could be unnerving. Wishing Connell could just tell Marianne what he wants and her being open about how much emotional baggage she carries, but then not everyone knows what to do or say every single time and that's..normal.

The whole journey is wrapped with intimacy, so even though they're just stealing glances from each other or just talking about schools, friends, jobs, it feels like we're eavesdropping their life. I shouldn't be there. You shouldn't be there. Nobody should. It gives us the ability to relate so much because we feel close to them.

Normal People is more than just a story about love. It's also about finding oneself, dealing with grief and nothingness. The whole experience is heightened with heavenly scoring, the direction of photography, as well as the brilliant performance from Daisy Edgar-Jones as Marianne and Paul Mescal as Connel.

So make a cuppa and sit comfortably, help yourself to catch the series on Hulu or BBC Three for the UK streaming only.

Happy watching!
